The Department of Economics celebrated its Silver Jubilee in the year 2007-08. As part of the year – long celebrations, a two day National Seminar on “Neo – Liberal Era of Indian Economy: An Analysis of Fifteen Years of Economic Reforms” was conducted on 28-29 June 2007. Eminent resource persons, both from with in and outside Kerala presented technical papers. Dr. Venkadesh. B. Athreya, Vice Chancellor – in charge, Bharthi dasan University, and eminent economist, inaugurated the Seminar and the Vice Chancellor University of Kerala, gave the valedictory address. A socio economic survey was conducted by 32 students in Pulluvila, a neighbouring coastal village(photograph enclosed). A Seminar on”Role of Nature in Economic Development” was conducted under the joint auspices of the Thursday Club and Department of Economics. A resource person from “World Wide Life Fund” participated. The Thursday club, a forum to debate social and economic issues, has been functioning in the Department since 2004. Debates and Quiz competitions are regularly held. A talk on “Healthy Living” was given by Dr. K. Biju Kumar and Dr. Jayakumar of the Department of Physical Education. An essay competition on “World Economic Crisis” was held. A Nature Club is also functioning in the Department. For the past two years, the students have attended two Nature Camps, one at Silent Valley and other at Thirunelli, Wayanad.
